Scogin Hill
Our History:
Scogin Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest and most beautiful cemeteries in McLean County! Founded in 1828, our cemetery has a rich history. Many members of the U.S. Armed Forces are buried here, representing veterans from the War of 1812, Civil War, Revolutionary War, and World War I. It is also the final resting place for many individuals that took part in the settlement of Bloomington township including elected officials, prominent citizens, and farmers.

In 1827, George Hinshaw Sr. and his family settled in McLean County. They lived approximately two miles from Scogin Hill Cemetery. His oldest son, Cyrus, was searching for a lost horse during terrible weather and when he returned home told his parents he found the perfect location for a cemetery. Shortly after, Cyrus was stricken with pneumonia and died on March 10, 1828. Cyrus Hinshaw was the first burial in what would become Scogin Hill Cemetery.
Andrew W. Scogin was a successful farmer and originally homesteaded the land for Scogin Hill Cemetery. He was awarded this section of land after joining the army and being made Captain during the Civil War. He donated some of his land to create Scogin Hill Cemetery. Andrew died in 1888 at the age of 65.

The Future:
Scogin Hill Cemetery continues to expand and still has limited lots available for sale. If you are interested in learning more about securing lots for your family, please contact us.
Community Involvement:
Unlike most cemeteries, Scogin Hill Cemetery is not owned or operated by the county or a private corporation, but instead by Board of Trustees. Therefore, the maintenance of our cemetery is funded mainly by donations. Please consider making a monetary donation to help us keep the cemetery beautiful. We also welcome volunteers to assist in seasonal clean up. Thank you for your support of Scogin Hill Cemetery!
